rust metal solution

Bonds With Rust...Cures Hard As Cement

Our Rust Conveter & Primer is a cementatious coating that is not based on normal resins, but which bonds like cement. Cement bonds by the crystallization of chloride and hydroxides and our product bonds by the combination of phosphates with aluminum hydroxides. The advantage of this type of bonding is twofold: 1. It gives the coating an extremely hard surface. 2. The bond can take place in the presence of water which means that our rust treatment may be used on a damp surface. Our rust converter and metal primer is a low VOC (less than 1% by weight) phosphating paint, making it the only successful paint to convert corrosion salts such as iron oxide to phosphates. These phosphates which may take the form of iron phosphate, zinc phosphate, chromium phosphate, etc. are resistant to oxidation and therefore prevent corrosion.

Directions

SURFACE PREPARATION Surface must be free from oil, grease, loose or peeling paint. Loose rust should be removed by mechanical agitation. A minimum cleanliness of SSPC-SP-3 is required. Our rust converter bonds best to a rusty surface; do not brush down to bare metal. Do not apply to a surface hotter than 100°F/37°C. Mix until uniform before applying. Apply to a thickness of 0.5–1.0 mil Dry Film Thickness (0.8–1.6 mil wet film thickness). Recommended for: Iron; Steel; Stainless Steel

directions

STEPS

1. Stir thoroughly before using. 2. Wirebrush surface to remove all loose flaky rust. Do NOT brush down to bare metal: Product bonds best to a rusty surface. 3. Wipe away debris with a cloth, paintbrush or air pressure. All grease and oil must be completely removed from the surface. Rinse thoroughly. 4. Stir product thoroughly until smooth, even consistency is obtained. 5. Apply with brush or spray. (For spray application, may dilute with up to 20% water.) 0.5-1.0 mil Dry Film Thickness. 6. If a top coat is to be applied use only 1 coat of product. Apply top coat only after product has dried completely. (48 hours) 7. If not applying a top coat; 2nd coat of product must be applied before first coat has dried; within (2-4 hours) 2nd coat should be applied at 0.5 mil dry film thickness. 8. For highly acidic, corrosive or abrasive environments such as strong acid or salt brine, a top coat is recommended.

FAQ

Can I use a garden sprayer?

You can, but it will be harder to control the spray pattern and get a completely uniform coat. It might also slow drying time and decrease coverage area due to putting on a heavier coat. Watch that the nozzle does not clog, this is a high solids product that could cause issues with smaller droplet spray patterns.

Can I spray a coat of XionLab 2 & 1 and spraying one coat of enamel?

Yes…one coat, our rust converter should be ok.

what is the recommended spray tip for an HPLV spray gun? What pressure setting is best?

Make sure that you follow the label directions and thin the product with no more than 20% water by volume and mix thoroughly. When being used in any sprayer, it is imperative that the directions for the sprayer be followed closely. Straining the final ‘thinned’ mixture as you put it into any sprayer is recommended by any spray gun manufacturer. Typical pressure used for an HVLP gun is 15-25psi, depending on the tip and how thin you reduce the product. The size of the strainer should be relative to the spray nozzle. If you have a 1.4 mil nozzle (ideal); for example, this means that any particle larger than 1.4 mil will clog the gun and adversely affect the performance. Disposable paint strainers are available almost anywhere paint is sold, this would be the preferred recommendation for any spray application. There will always be some level of precipitate that exists, so do not be alarmed if the strainer catches some unincorporated solids. Mix the 2 in 1 or shake it in a paint shaker first; then thin the fully mixed paint with up to 20% water. Mix the thinned paint and then pour it through your paint strainer, directly into the reservoir on the paint gun. This will yield the best coverage and performance.

What do I need to do to apply this product with a spray gun?

Applying the product with a spray gun is a very easy process. We recommend diluting the product 20% with water and running it through a strainer, fine enough to catch any particles that are larger than the openings in the tip. Only dilute what you are going to spray and discard any unused portion, just like any other coating. Clean the gun with simple water and a small brush. Follow the manufacture’s recommendations for disassembly and cleaning of the spray gun.

Can I use your 2-1 rust converter on my new steel parts that are not rusty as a primer?

Yes, you can use this on bare ferrous metal. Many times there is still minor oxidation that this product will attack and protect. Be sure any oils, grease, or protective coatings are stripped from the bare metal before coating.

Can I use XionLab Rust converter Primer on part vehicle parts such as rear end, crossmembers, brackets and other small parts?

Yes, our product is ideal for all mild steel, stamped plates, cast iron, brackets, and other automotive parts.

If I scrape all loose rust and then apply two coats, will it extend the life of the pan?

Our product will protect your pan from further oxidation and thus extending its useful life.

What is the minimum temperature that your rust converter can be applied?

We do not recommend using our rust converter under 50 degrees.

Will it be ok to pour concrete around the treated rebar

Concrete is no problem.

I live in an area with temperatures goes below zero. Do I need to be concerned that my converter was exposed to below freezing temperatures?

Absolutely not. Our product expands and contracts with heat and freezing temperatures. This is one of the things that make it so effective, is the ability to maintain solid adhesion despite temperature swings.

Will your product adhere to a galvanized steel roof that is rusted?

This product should not be used on soft metals, such as galvanizing. It is a low pH product that will etch into soft metals. If the galvanization is gone and it is only steel, our product will work well.

My one concern is that your product dries to a red color and I am looking for a final color of black. Is it possible to add a dye pack or pigment to your product to achieve this?

The product has not been tested with added dyes, we do not recommend this. It is preferred that you apply a topcoat in the color of your choosing.

Would the 2 in 1 rust converter be usable on a steel hull boat. Will an epoxy primer and paint adhere to the 2 in 1?

Yes, the product has been used in many maritime applications with great success. It shows great adhesion when used with an epoxy primer.

After applying the base coat of the rust converter, how long can/should I wait to topcoat?

The product should be fully cured, before applying another coat. Relative humidity, temperature, airflow, and sun exposure all affect curing; however, we recommend a baseline of 24-48 hours to cure completely.

If I choose to top coat with another product, how long can I wait before applying?

The product should be fully cured, before applying another coat. Relative humidity, temperature, airflow, and sun exposure all affect curing; however, we recommend a baseline of 24-48 hours to cure completely.

is this a moisture cured product?

No, it is not, it is a water-based product that cures through a typical evaporation process.

f this is OK to thin with water does that mean I can spray and not worry about any minor moisture in air line?

Yes, as long as there are no other contaminants such as oil or silicone. The presence of moisture in the line might affect the appearance of the final dried product as it could yield an inconsistent spray pattern.

What is life of opened & unopened can?

It is best to use it up once it has been opened, but if you cannot…you should try to use the remainder within 3 months. It is imperative that you seal the container well to avoid the product drying out. Any unopened container should be used within 12 months and protected from freezing or superheating while in storage. Once the product has been applied and cured, freezing and heating are no longer an issue. This product is >50% solids, so it will settle over time, make sure to mix or shake it thoroughly before any use.

is unused portion best poured off into full smaller containers?

No, we do not recommend transferring leftovers into a smaller container. The instructions and product information label should always be on the container the product is housed.

If brushed or rolled can it be worked or are you supposed to avoid a lot of movement once down?

It is best to put it down and leave it alone until it cures.

Would you recommend this product for these applications to prevent rusting. Would there be any reaction with the concrete or VOC’s in the home?

Yes, this product would work to protect almost any ferrous metal product.

Can I use it on a roof vent that's aluminum and on galvanized steel?

No, this product is not for use on aluminum or galvanized steel.

What kind of your product is suitable for industrial furnace applications?

This product has been successfully tested for expansion and contraction up to 300F and showed no issues with adhesion. The product might discolor at the higher range, but it did not affect the performance.

Do you have experience with your rust converter in industrial furnaces?

This product has been successfully tested for expansion and contraction up to 300F and showed no issues with adhesion. The product might discolor at the higher range, but it did not affect the performance.

How long does it take before full drying and/or coating by next application?

Typically 24-48 hours depending on relative humidity, temperature, airflow, and sun exposure.

What is the maximum permanent (operating) temperature of exposure allowed on the formed layer as a result of using your product?

Our product has been tested up to 300F.

At a constant temperature of about 212 ° F, how many years will the formed layer last?

It is impossible to assess that with limited information. There are many other factors that come into play, but our product has been tested up to 300F.

After applying the rust converter, can metal elements be welded onto the formed layer without removing the layer?

Our product is no a weld-through primer, you will need to expose the bare metal to fuse it properly.

What is the approximate quantity of rust converter needed to apply on an area of about 11,840 sq.ft, and how much will it cost?

At 1.0mil dry thickness, you can cover about 1,000 sq feet. Any channels or brakes in the metal tend to collect additional material and affect the coverage. If your surface is perfectly flat and you are using a sprayer, we would recommend approximately 12 gallons plus a 10-15% overage, to cover any product lost in transfer, drift, or pooling.

Will the XionLab Rust Converter and Primer works in salt water?

It has been used in both saltwater applications as well as brackish water and performed well.

So this stuff does what it says it will do. It’s think and it sticks tenaciously to rust. It doesn’t stick that well to anything that’s not rust. You can apply it to a moist surface or thin it with water, but I would suggest you don’t When wet it gets rather runny and drips a lot.

This washes easily off your skin, but will not come out of clothes. Dress appropriately. Wear eye protection, but you don’t need a ventilator. It doesn’t off-gas much.

Two coats are recommended and you can get two coats out of a gallon on a full size truck frame.

  2. bbretailer

Very easy to apply. If you are spraying it on you can just use water to dilute it. It is like a maroon color not black but looks very good. Makes it so much easier so you don’t have to clean metal all the way down to bare metal just knock off loose rust scales and apply.

My project involves welding 24 steel channels to the steel posts and treating rusted metal plates. I was debating whether to use Rustoleum metal primer and Enamel. I chose this product thinking that I could paint without a top coat. I found that one coat could not withstand pressure washing with 2000 psi. Two coats could withstand pressure washing. The red paint is thick. One coat could cover any color. Cleaning is easily when comparing to oil paint. Shipping is very fast. I used two and half gallons in my project.

I used Wooster 4.5 inch Jumbo-Koter Micro Plush roller cover and finish is spray-like. I used wire cup wheel to grind down mill scale and rust and smooth out old paint. Then I used ZEP Purple Cleaner & Degreaser with 1:5 ratio to clean the metal prior to paint.

I’m happy with the result. The color is a beautiful flat red.

This stuff absolutely worked great. I bought a utility trailer from a retiring landscaper 16 feet x 76 inches wide . Tandem axle . It dried hard a rock and quickly . I drilled thru it to mount some lights after it dried without it cracking or flaking . It really does work best on metal with some surface rust so don’t grind down to bare metal. Knock off the scale and leave the rest for the best results. It took just under a gallon to do a 16 foot trailer frame . It lays down a great base to paint over

I used this to treat rusty body panels on an old truck I’m slowly restoring to hopefully prevent any further rust while I slowly fix one thing at a time, and it’s stored outside. I’m finally getting around to some work where I needed to sand this and it truly looks like the rust underneath is “converted” judging by the “blackness”.

In most places I just brushed it on so I used it full strength without thinning on the areas I’m now sanding. In one area so far I’ve applied body filler over this product, sanded it smooth, and then applied primer (self etching because the sanding left some bare metal exposed”.

It’ll now likely sit all winter before I get to sand those areas back down and see what I’ve got as far as any separation of the bondo from the treated parts. I’m going to use the last of this to threat the floor of another truck bed and see how that holds up over the winter.

This is really thick stuff! I did spray a few hard to reach parts after thinning with about 20% distilled water and it seemed to work well but did require extensive mixing with a drill powered “paddle”. Clean up can be a little rough if this is given any length of time at all to dry so it’s wise to use gloves and dress accordingly.

I was able to remove some dried product from painted surfaces with acetone but that’s an extreme measure so be sure the painted surface won’t be destroyed by the acetone. Overall I’m impressed. As far as pricing I’d say compare it to using another rust converter and then following up with at least two coats of primer. Oh, and this did fill some pin holes, although I’m not sure I really like that for my usage.

  7. douglaspeffer

I used this to try and preserve the frame on my jeep grand Cherokee. I have never used anything like this before but it seems to cover well. I am curious to see how durable it is.

  8. adam

My camper trailer had spots that needed to be treated for rust. Nothing too bad but wanted to keep them in check so they didn’t get worse. This worked excellently and coded very well. Several areas where different metals join together like the platform that the propane tanks set on, this was able to adhere very well and not be too thin and run off. I applied black paint to the trailer after this dried and it held very well. Very happy with the product. On my automobile I had one small area from an accident that creased the metal and the paint was peeling in a small bit of rust was forming. I applied with a brush to that area and then use some touch up paint. It looks great and I’m happy with it. Overall a wonderful product to have in my shed with other tools so I can use it when I see any rust.

  9. helicopter

Fairly impressed with this stuff. Read all about it as much as I could through the reviews – what worked for folks and what didn’t. I prepped the bottom of a truck bed with a wire brush wheel on an angle grinder – knocked off the loose rust, dulled the existing paint everywhere I could with 80grit sandpaper. Used a cheap chip brush to slop it on, and then used a small, 3″ wide roller to smooth it out to a reasonable thickness. Two-four hours later, after being on a fan @ 62˚f, I could scratch at it with my fingernail and it wouldn’t come off. Waited a full 24 hours, did another coat where I thought it needed it, waited another 24 hours and then did a top coat over it with some spray-on undercoating. We shall see how it holds up over time, but first impressions – for a DTM, water-based primer/rust converter – seems really well engineered. The only thing I wish they had on their website was the MSDS sheet, and perhaps an actual TDS.

  10. gerardschneider

worked well for a vehicle frame refurb

  11. chriss

My 86 4Runner has a lot of rust so after I’m done cutting/chipping an area out I want to make sure the rest doesn’t come back. This rust converter neutralizes the rust so it doesn’t continue to spread while sealing it into a paint ready surface. It even sands well so after I’ve coated the bad area I can smooth it out before applying primer throughout. Though in areas you aren’t going to see I’ve even just left it as this as the top coat with no worry. It cures HARD and has held up to salt roads in the winter with no new rust or flaking paint. Great stuff.

  12. usounya

I bought this for using on my big catering rig. So far it has provided a good surface prep for paint and held up to the heat.

  13. robert

Easy clean up and converts rust and sticks to almost any clean Steel/pained surface. Easy to work with and a hard durable/paintable surface.

  14. hippyhikers

This was amazing! I have used a lot of different primers & undercoating in over 46 + year most claim something, and most fail at part of the claim. This product delivers all on claims. Ease of use. Kills & seals rust. clean up is simple.
Have rust? use this you will not be disappointed!

  15. ellapope

Overall, this product worked very well. Although initial mixing is tough because it is very thick, adding water thins the paint, making application very easy with a spray gun. If you are using a brush then adding water is not needed but it will apply very thick.

  16. lifeid

I’m not a paint expert by any means, but this is good to have on hand. Was not easy to find this in non-aerosol form for some reason. It’s water based, applies, mixes & cleans up easily. Perfect from spot jobs or whatever.

  17. leojohnson

Easy to apply… works as stated.
Shipping was on time and no complaints, satisfied customer

  18. bigal

I used this on a wrought iron fence that was in trouble. The product went on easy using an old sock to wipe it on. The redish color made it easy to see while painting black. I will use this product on any future needs – great product.

  19. williamsavage

We used it to stop the rusting of our Bilco doors, which are over 35 years old and had a fair amount of rust. Not too much scraping to prepare the surface. Went on easily and dried to touch quickly. Very easy cleanup.

  20. chrislucas

Awsome coverage and easy to apply. Drys to the touch fairly quickly and bonds with the rust quickly as well. You can see a slight color change in the floor board where the paint is interacting with the rust.

  21. herbie

I used this in restoring a truck frame. Its easy to spray and covered well. Only wish it came in black. I used a LVLP spray gun with good results.

  22. daveberthold

Brushed on and sprayed easily, coverage is better than expected. Leaves a tough surface, hopefully does well on buried pipe.

  23. ernie

This is something that I can’t imagine that will work. I was hesitant to purchase but, went for it. I even search YouTube and watch all of them. Boy, I was glad that I did. I live close to the ocean and all metal in my back yard rust. Now with xionlab, they will last for a long time. I recommend this product.

  24. ernie

  25. seth

Amazing product. I received my first order and it had globs in it. Almost impossible to mix back to desired consistency. I used it on a jeep axle. Only time will tell the longevity of product

  26. bigb

This stuff is great. It’s about the same as working with paint only it’s a little thicker than most paint. I bought this for my rusting Take 3 trailer and it does great once I get it fully covered I plan to just paint over it.

  27. ericw

Easy to apply, minimal preparation, very hard finish, easy clean up. Used as a primer & undercoating for a very rusted trailer, worked great, would buy again

  28. andrewdanna

This product works exactly as described. Loosen the rust with a wire brush then apply the mixed/stirred coating then you are done. wait 48 hours before adding a painted coating but it is not necessary to add a colored coating on top of the Xionlab.

  29. t6gadget

Made a carport from old oil field pipe. Used a bucket and car sponge to apply. One coat was more than adequate if painting over it. The rust red color looks good as-is, but you’ll need a second coat per the instructions if not using paint as an overcoat.

  30. smile

The application went well. A single coat has covered well, it has a lot of solids in the mix, but not at all too thick. I did not have heavy rust to cover, just smooth surface rust that I prepped with a good scrub with a wire brush. It dried to a hard finish. Roller cleaned up easy with soap and water.

  31. gregcannon

Perfection in a can! Used in a large and serious project refinishing rusty steel support beams in a modular home. No need to look for anything else.

  32. derek

Be aware that brushing on an acrylic enamel over this primer will cause this primer to run even though fully cured.
Other wise this is an excellent product that goes on smoothly, kills the rust and the smell is not as strong as other products I have tried. I will purchase again.

  33. jeffcloud

I took a chance on this to treat some surface rust on some freezer panels I was using to line an aircraft hangar with. Love this stuff! Sprays nice , dries fast. One gallon goes a long way. Will but again for anything related to rust treatment.

  34. weggwagg

    great product , easy cleanup

  35. daisy

Super easy to use clean up is easy this product is amazing painted over rusty metal and leave it outside for 1 week the results are amazing

  36. johnnybennett

Awesome! Coated the rusty floorboard in a 68 Ford Fairlane.

  37. charleswood

GOES ON THICK FOR GOOD COVERAGE IT WILL TAKE TIME TO SEE IF IT DOES KEEP RUST AWAY

  38. karendegenhardt

    covered easily, looks good.

  39. evanwiles

    Does what it claims too

  40. ralphdgibson

Used it to coat overs reputed frame of an old truck I’m restoring. It was easy to spray it on and I put a topcoat over. It cures really hard.
